A Day in the Life of a Chief Executive Officer
As the chief executive officer, you arrive each day with a clear vision of what you want to achieve for our credit union, both in the short-term and the long-term. You are responsible for establishing our culture. And, you conduct yourself in a manner which models it for our employees.
You work closely with our board of directors. You spend time in meetings with them both learning from them about our mission and educating them on day-to-day operational issues that need to be addressed. Together with them, you strategize and decide what direction [Insert name of credit union here] is going in.
You are responsible for directing the daily operations of our credit union, so you also work closely with your management team ensuring that they are working together in the best interest of our members as they each effectively lead their individual departments. You inspire your management team and all employees to be their personal best and do their part in carrying out our mission. You coach, inspire, and facilitate opportunities for employee development. You also work closely with HR regarding hiring and payroll practices. You are responsible for hiring at the management level.
You help ensure the financial stability of our credit union and work directly with the CFO on a regular basis to establish budgets and run risk analyses. You employ adequate internal controls, generally accepted accounting practices, ratio analysis, liquidity analysis, spread analysis, and investment management.
While you definitely do spend time interpreting data, most of your time is spent interacting with people. You often spend a large portion of your day in meetings, both large and small. You also represent our credit union at community & industry functions. So, though you have some flexibility in your schedule, some days are long and include activities outside of normal banking hours.
You also spend time keeping up with current events, learning more about our industry, keeping up on regulations, and improving your leadership skills. You get great satisfaction out of ensuring that [Insert name of credit union here] continues to grow and deliver more to our members and community.
Qualifications
- BA in business, finance, accounting, related field or CUNA Certified Credit Union Executive certification or 8 years of total relevant experience
- Minimum of 6 years of experience in Finance
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in leadership
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Proficiency with professional accounting software
- Ability to pass a criminal background check
- Ability to pass a credit and bond-ability check
- Ability to pass a drug test
- Ability to travel
