A Day in the Life of an Assistant Branch Manager

As an assistant branch manager, you assist the branch manager in ensuring that your branch operates by [Insert name of credit union here’s standards and reaches specific goals. The branch manager often needs to focus outward in the community, so you are the rock that your branch employees depend on for consistent support.

You are primarily responsible for the direct supervision of the branch’s day-to-day operations as delegated to you by the branch manager. Much of your time is spent coaching and supporting the head teller and the senior member’s services rep to keep the branch running smoothly and efficiently. You hire, train, and promote teamwork among employees. You spend some time each day resolving complex technical and operational problems that arise.

You are a coach, a problem solver, and a communicator. You spend most of your day interacting with people, both employees and members. When the branch manager is unavailable, you step in as acting manager. You ensure that procedures have been followed and all branch transactions are balanced at the close of each day. You get great satisfaction out of keeping your branch’s daily operations running smoothly and efficiently.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2 years of experience in the banking industry
  • 1 year of management or leadership experience in any field

A business-related degree would be a plus. HR training would also be useful. Experience, however, is the best training ground for this position. So any extra experience in sales, lending, or community relations would be helpful. Certification as a notary is desirable.

Excellent communication skills is the number one requirement for excelling as an assistant branch manager. You will need to clearly understand what your branch manager wants, and then clearly communicate that to other branch employees. You will also need the ability to clearly explain things to members when unusual or complicated issues arise. Leadership skills are also extremely important in order to succeed in this position.
