A Day in the Life of an Accounting Manager

As an accounting manager at [Insert name of credit union here], you direct the operations of the accounting department. You ensure the complete, accurate, and timely completion of financial records. You delegate tasks to the accounting staff as needed. You prepare reports for corporate. You oversee a variety of routine accounting tasks including daily back office accounting duties, account reconciliations, and monthly financial reporting.

You maintain ledgers. You participate in managing the budget, balance sheet ratios, daily cash flow, and investment portfolio. You ensure that additions, transfers, and retirements of fixed assets are recorded properly. You ensure the proper reconciliation of depreciation accounts. You enter and approve daily entries, monitor account balances, and maintain supporting records and files. You and your staff research pricing, costs, and discrepancies. You approve corrections to the general ledger and the automated cost accounting system.

You spend some time working independently at your desk but communicate regularly with your accounting staff. You help solve problems, approve changes, and handle the more complex day-to-day accounting issues that may arise. You supervise daily accounting activities and take pride in ensuring that [Insert name of credit union here]’s financial records are kept accurate and up-to-date.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business admin, or related field or 5+ years of in-depth accounting experience

  • Solid working knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Solid math skills
