A Day in the Life of a Chief Financial Officer

As the chief financial officer, you arrive each day ready to safeguard the financial stability of [Insert name of credit union here]. You are involved in multiple projects at a time. Departments throughout our credit union consult with you regularly. You are a whiz at time management, reprioritizing often.

You are responsible for the timely and accurate filing of all daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports on behalf of the credit union in compliance with federal and state regulatory requirements and sound accounting principles. You analyze data with an eye for developing an economic strategy for the future. You work closely with the CEO and make presentations to the board of directors often. You are a key strategic member of the executive team, collaborating with them on developing a long-term and short-term financial plan.

You manage the budget in the context of a multi-year financial plan. You employ cost-benefit analysis in the administration of the budget. You direct receipts, disbursements, and expenditures of money or capital assets. You manage our credit union’s investment portfolio, taking into consideration risk & liquidity as you make investment decisions. You oversee the preparation of Form 990 (Return of organization exempt from income tax) and Form 990T (exempt organization business tax-unrelated business income tax- UBIT). You ensure that all funds and physical assets of [Insert name of credit union here] are appropriately accounted for. You ensure compliance with all financial and accounting policies and regulations. You oversee financial audits and provide necessary documents to auditors and regulatory bodies in a timely fashion.
