The McConnell Group,, a Health Science company, is sourcing candidates that will use medical technology to perform clinical lab testing. Under the direction of the laboratory manager and designated supervisory staff, the medical technologist provides routine and specialized laboratory testing in a timely manner for patient care. Performs duties independently with minimum supervision. May serve as charge technologist for assigned sections of the laboratory. Requires Medical Technologist (ASCP) or equivalent certification.

Role and Responsibilities

(1) Technologist II is responsible for fulfilling the responsibilities of the supervisor, as assigned. The assignment of responsibilities must be written and specific.

(2) Technologist II shall fulfill the following responsibilities.

(a) Performs tests authorized by the Director or Supervisor.

(b) Follows the clinical laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.

(c) Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.

(d) Adheres to the clinical laboratory's quality control policies, and documents all quality control activities, instruments, and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed in accordance with the clinical laboratory's approval policies and procedures.

(e) Follows the clinical laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the clinical laboratory's defined acceptable levels of performance.

(f) Identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify a supervisor or director.

(g) Documents all corrective action taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.

(h) Exercises professional judgment in the evaluation, specimen integrity, result accuracy, and inter-result validity and takes corrective action as necessary. Such corrective action shall include specimen rejection, recollection, and/or retesting using the same or alternate methods and/or utilizing other skills associated with the practice of clinical laboratory science to ensure validity and accuracy of testing at all times taking care not to compromise patient care with excessive rejections, recollections or delays. If in their judgment a specimen is compromised, the Technologist shall include an appropriate disclaimer statement in the report indicating the potentially compromised nature of the result and why. Reviews the accuracy of final reports, verifying computer print-outs where applicable.

(i) Participate in proficiency testing samples and ensure that these samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.

(j) Provide technical support

(k) Stay updated on lab policies, safety regulations, and other procedures to keep all lab employees and experiments safe and compliant. Maintains up-to-date overall knowledge of this professional field as required to perform normal duties described in this job description.

(3) The Technologist II shall also fulfill the following additional responsibilities.

  1. Monitor analyzers and results for trends and shifts that may indicate the need to contact Technical Support.
  2. Work with Technical Support or Information Technology to resolve issues or validate updates to software or processes as required
  3. Validation and or Calibration of new assays or procedures. Implementation of new test procedures or new equipment under the direction of the supervisor.
  4. Train and Insure Competencies for newly hired clinical staff as well as provide technical guidance as needed
  5. Monitor inventory of reagents and supplies to ensure no interruptions in operations
  6. Additional Projects as required and as assigned by management
  7. Must have a general knowledge of all standards and regulations that apply specifically to this job position as issued by FDA, Florida Department of Health, and other applicable accreditation and regulatory authorities.
  8. Must be thoroughly familiar with all administrative policies and procedures in addition to all technical procedures. The application of all these policies must be completely understood to accomplish this substitute supervisory function
  9. Participate in departmental meetings and generate suggestions for improving the efficiency and productivity of laboratory operations

Qualifications and Education Requirements

- Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, biotechnology, biology, or a related field is preferred

- A state of Florida Technologist License is required or the ability to obtain a license during the interview process

- Technology licensing in one or more clinical specialty areas is required

- 3-4 years of proven lab experience or relevant position

- Experience in operating electrical and nonelectrical laboratory equipment and potentially dangerous substances (flammable liquids, infectious bacteria, biohazards, etc.)

- Knowledge of LIS systems, preventative measures, and general laboratory best practices

- Excellent physical condition and endurance

- Working knowledge of MS Office (especially Excel) and database systems

- Ability to work under time-sensitive deadlines

- Attention to detail and good organizational skills

- Good communication and teamwork skills

- Understanding of electronic and computerized equipment in laboratories

- Able to follow instructions and strictly follow procedures
