Job Description:

Systems Technology & Research, Inc. (STaR) is searching for a Systems Safety Engineer to support the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Project Office (UAS PO) located at Redstone Arsenal, AL. This position will be responsible for planning, managing, coordinating, and executing a comprehensive aviation weapon system safety program.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the integration of civil hardware and software design assurance processes, as described in SAE ARP 4754A and DO-187C, into system safety assessment processes
  • Assess reliability assessments, such as Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analyses, and the tailoring of those assessments to meet system safety program objectives
  • Work with the customer system safety and software safety organizations to support development of; software safety plans and standards, identification of system hazards, and software safety requirements to ensure software safety requirements are implemented and tested.
  • Support tasks focused on the development of software safety analysis, test, and contribution to potential safety risk
  • Support identification, documentation, and tracking resolution of software safety requirements and changes
  • Performing peer reviews of software safety documentation and analyses including, but not limited to, Safety Assessment Reports (SAR), Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
  • Work with suppliers to ensure supplier products and processes meet program software safety standards, and generating software safety assessment reports
  • Provide input into development and documentation of technical and contract requirements
  • Work with stakeholders to assess program/project technical risks related to system safety deliverables and develop risk mitigation strategies

Education and General experience:

  • A Bachelor's degree with 10+ years of system safety engineering experience is required
  • Exceptional organizational skills to be able to manage system safety analyses and track requirements across multiple projects
  • Ability to work with all stakeholders to identify and integrate system safety requirements
  • Knowledge of USG regulations, policies, processes, and guidance such as System Safety Program Plans (SSPP), Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA), System Safety Assessments (PSSA/SSA), and Safety Assessment Reports (SAR)
  • Experience with Microsoft Office tools
  • Experience with Windchill, TopVue, and DOORS is a plus, but not required
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • DoD Staff Experience
  • Ability to travel (5 to 10%)
