Lighting Sales Representative (Outside Sales)

We also guide the process - planning, photometrics, field visits, CAD drawings, installation instructions - to take our clients' vision from concept to reality, on time and on budget.

What We Are Looking For:

Southern Lighting Gallery is currently expanding our sales force to keep pace with our growing business. The right candidate will be passionate about providing a consultative sales approach in working with residential clients, custom builders, developers, general contractors, and electricians, to find the right lighting solutions for their projects and needs. Ideally, we are seeking someone with lighting sales experience and a strong background in consultative sales experience with the client base described above. Previous experience visiting customer locations and construction jobsites will be helpful, as well as superb interpersonal and organizational skills.

Some of the responsibilities include quoting of lighting specs, seeking alternative value engineering options, and acting as the key conduit between large customer project orders, from initial order placement, coordination with the factory or vendors, through to delivery and project completion.

Job Description:

Section I. General Overview & Reporting:

The Lighting Sales Rep provides a consultative sales role in working with commercial electrical and general contractors to provide lighting solutions for their projects. This position requires quoting of lighting specs, seeking alternative value engineering options, and acting as the key conduit between large customer project orders, from initial order placement, coordination with the factory or vendors, through to delivery and project completion.

This position reports to General Manager of the showroom/store.

Section II. Duties & Areas of Responsibility:

The primary duties of the Lighting Sales Rep consist of, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Providing a consultative sales approach with business partners (primarily electrical contractors or general contractors) in providing lighting solutions for their commercial/ industrial projects
  • Developing and maintaining solid relationships with all business partners, internal/external customers, and vendors
  • Quote/Proposal preparation, and follow up to include:
    • Obtaining requirements
    • Working alternatives or value engineering options, when required
    • Negotiations with the customer
    • Closing the initial sale
  • Project management to include:
    • Coordinating w/internal and external stakeholders on initial order placement
    • Coordinating internal company activities in the fulfillment of the project goals
    • Participating in internal project meetings and project site meetings, where applicable
    • Providing continual & timely, project-related communication to customers, business partners, and internal departments to ensure project timelines are met
    • Maintaining close contact with the customer to proactively address issues or changes in scope
    • Proactively determine site readiness for deliveries, and confirm delivery with builder
  • Post Sales Activity to include
    • Investigating and resolving customer issues
    • Assisting w/warranty issues
    • Coordinating returns, replacement, or repair of defective materials
  • General Sales & Showroom Activities
    • Provide backup to inside sales (showroom), on periodic basis
    • Attend Home shows, develop direct mail and email lists, etc.
    • Interact with industry professionals and develop network of clients & contacts
    • Proactively stay abreast of industry trends, vendors, the local market & products
  • Other duties, as assigned

  • Section III: Necessary Skills and Attributes:
  • 3+ years experience in consultative sales with clients that include custom builders, developers, general contractors, electricians, and residential clients or closely related construction building materials industries
  • Previous lighting product sales experience, preferred
  • Experience with visiting customer locations, construction jobsites and following required safety protocols
  • Proven experience working with commercial/residential business partners
  • Excellent self motivation and initiative
  • Outstanding customer service skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong time management, planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to assess and prioritize (with flexibility to change course as needed)
  • Excellent interpersonal, and collaborative skills
  • Proven problem resolution and decision-making skills
  • Professional demeanor and appearance
  • Solid Microsoft Office skills (Word & Excel)
  • Ability to learn products, solutions & processes quickly
  • ERP experience helpful (TagNTrack exp a plus)
  • Ability to work well both independently, and in team settings
  • Professional personal vehicle for jobsite visits (expenses to be reimbursed)
  • Ability to work 5-day work week (some Saturdays)

Section IV: Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to drive a vehicle safely
  • Visual acuity required to read computer screens, written documents, inspect materials, products, drive, etc.
  • Ability to speak and hear on the phone
  • Must be able to work sitting, standing, climbing, stooping, bending, and in squatting position
  • Manual dexterity required for computer work, to handle materials, supplies, etc.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. unassisted
  • Ability to visit construction jobsites (non-climate controlled sites, climbing, etc.)
