A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A NETWORK AND COMPUTER SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR

As a Network and Computer Systems Administrator, you keep our technological systems operating seamlessly as we work to keep the lights on for our members. You assist with creating plans and budgets for your department. Continually working to optimize network and computer systems performance and minimize downtime, you participate in technical research, stay current on Microsoft and network certifications, perform system analysis, and perform hardware or software upgrades. You develop, implement, and maintain policies, procedures, and associated training plans for network and system administration and appropriate use.

You regularly perform a variety of network and system-related tasks, including designing and testing business continuity plans, monitoring network and computer systems performance, recommending enhancements, and ensuring network connectivity. You also install new or rebuild existing servers as well as configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, and storage. In addition, you IP-based phone systems and our wide area network (WAN) infrastructure.

Leveraging your communication skills, you act as a liaison between end users and vendors, negotiating to secure hardware and software products and services. You provide technical support to end users in various ways by establishing service-level agreements and providing troubleshooting services. You also administer and maintain end user accounts, permissions, and access rights. You take pride in the work you do to ensure the stable operation and efficient performance of our systems, databases, storage, and networks!


QUALIFICATIONS FOR A NETWORK AND COMPUTER SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline, such as computer science or engineering
  • 5+ years of experience with personal computers and systems equipment installation as well as network communications installation, service, and repair
  • Working knowledge about computer systems, network equipment, and applications
  • Experience with Windows, Unix, and Linux server operating systems
  • Experience with Cisco and Palo Alto routers, switches, and firewalls
