Apprentice Signal Technician

Job Summary:

Under immediate direction Traffic Manager, is responsible for technical skilled work in the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical traffic control equipment and related devices including street lighting. Working Conditions are primarily outside with frequent exposure to temperature extremes, traffic construction dust, Damp/wet surfaces, overhead power lines, high noise and electrical hazards.

Essential Job Functions:


a. Assists with minor repairs of electrical, electronic and equipment.

b. Performs basic testing and evaluation of traffic signal control equipment for system compatibility.

c. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, and streamline work processes.

d. Performs all routine maintenance required to ensure that the traffic signal systems are operating properly.

e. Programming of various types of computerized controllers i.e School Zone Flasher

f. Maintain pavement markings on city-owned parking facilities and all city streets, including lane channelization, traffic hazards, school-pedestrian crosswalks, railroad crossings and delineations.

g. Ensures all markings conform to good engineering practices and are in accordance with regulations and requirements.

h. Installs traffic signs and removes signs no longer required

i. Close streets and detour traffic when necessary.

j. Performs other job related tasks as assigned.

Conditions of Employment:

a. Applicant must take and pass a pre-employment drug test administered by the City of Edinburg at the City's expense.

b. Applicant must have a current and valid Texas Driver's License from the Texas Department of Public Safety with a satisfactory driving record and insurable by the City's current insurance carrier.

c. Achieve IMSA Level I Certification

d. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Required Education:

High school diploma, GED or equivalency.

Education Preference:

Community college, vocational, business, technical, or correspondence school certifications are likely sources.

Required Work Experience:

Must have knowledge of basic electronics, theory and knowledge of occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the electrical trade.

a. Requires a working knowledge of proper operation, equipment repairs and operation, safety precautions, and occupational hazards involved in operating equipment.

b. Job requires working evenings, weekends, holidays and during hurricane or other emergencies, when needed.

c. Required to be on stand-by (on call waiting to be engaged to work) when necessary.

d. Work requires the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.

e. Work requires regular interaction involving exchange and receipt of information.

f. Normally performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results.

g. Work requires the use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the organization.

i. Able to operate vehicles and equipment safely in area of high pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

j. Knowledge of the geography of the City of Edinburg.

Work Conditions:

Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk.

Physical Demands:

The job has some significant hazards and physical demands are heavy. Duties involve continuous bending, lifting, digging, carrying or walking, and/or using force equal to lifting 50-100 pounds. Requires stooping, kneeling, bending, turning and reaching; at times work in noisy and crowded environments.

Mental Demands:

While performing the duties of this class, the incumbent is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; use math and mathematical reasoning; perform detailed work, multiple tasks; work with constant interruptions; and interact with staff and the public.
