OVERVIEW: The California Film Institute (CFI) is seeking a Membership Manager to join the Development Department to oversee and cultivate a vibrant membership program and supervise one Membership Associate. The Membership Manager is responsible for achieving the financial goals set for Membership, which includes retention, upgrades and acquisition of new members. Activities associated with this role include managing special initiatives and campaigns to retain and generate CFI members, managing member benefits and services, actively participating in and supporting CFI's film festivals and year-round theater and education programming, and encouraging member loyalty and upgraded levels of engagement. The Membership Manager must be a skilled communicator with the ability to provide outstanding customer service and project a professional company image through on-stage, in-person, and phone interaction.

ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA FILM INSTITUTE: The non-profit California Film Institute celebrates and promotes film as art and education through year-round programming at the non-profit independent Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center, presentation of the acclaimed Mill Valley Film Festival and DocLands Documentary Film Festival, and cultivation of the next generation of filmmakers and audiences through CFI Education programs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interdepartmental Coordination
    • Work with the Director of Development and Marketing Department on the planning and production of membership communications via email, printed and digital materials, social media, and other communications.
      • Lead and create all Membership Campaigns, especially during peak acquisition season that runs from June-October. This requires managing and overseeing the campaign project from design to mailing, data analysis, writing/editing content, web page design, online purchasing navigations, and creative sales strategies.
      • Design and manage programs, incentives, and activities to recognize and incentivize member loyalty and upgraded levels of membership.
      • Create renewal emails and member communications for year-round retention.
    • Work closely with the Operations staff for the Mill Valley Film Festival to ensure member experience standards are met and festival priority benefits are received.
    • Work closely with Box Office Management to fulfill ticketing requests and benefits during both the Mill Valley Film Festival and the DocLands Film Festival.
    • Work with Programming and Marketing departments to service members with consistent year-round member screenings and events.
  • Overlapping Work with Associate
    • Interface with the membership community directly, providing responsive customer service and proactive stewardship of members' relationships with CFI.
      • Create and maintain positive relationships with existing and prospective members.
      • Work with the Membership Associate and other staff to input and respond to all membership inquiries promptly.
      • Process and maintain membership data in CFI ticketing and fundraising management systems (Raiser's Edge).
      • Process new and renewal applications of membership in a timely and accurate manner.
      • Attend events to promote membership programs.
      • Ensure members are receiving benefits at the Christopher B Smith Rafael Film Center and that Membership has a strong physical sales presence at the center year-round.
  • Development Strategy
    • Review and stay abreast of current membership standards and trends within the arts and film industry.
    • Create an annual membership strategy for annual presentation to the Director of Development.
      • Work closely with the Director of Development to continually analyze and adjust the strategy and messaging as needed.
    • Provide detailed weekly membership reports to the Director of Development.
    • Manage Member Screening operations alongside the Donor Team to facilitate a smooth RSVP process.
    • Work with Sponsorship Manager to coordinate departmental goals to consistently identify mutually beneficial opportunities.

  • Financials
    • Create and maintain Membership annual budget.
      • Build comparative analysis for annual presentation to the Director of Development.
    • Create annual revenue projections based on analytical data analysis.
    • Coordinate with the accounts department to ensure member revenue is reported accurately.
    • Sign off on any departmental expenses before submitting to accounts.
    • Consistently track and analyze member revenue to obtain monthly revenue goals.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong written and oral communication and organization skills.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills to communicate with members.
  • Ability to demonstrate discretion and consistent, professional behavior when working with celebrities, community, and industry leaders.
  • Excellent interdepartmental teamwork and coordination to push large projects through to completion.
  • Experience with film festival programming and special event coordination is preferred.
  • Be comfortable being the face of Membership i.e. making introductions onstage at film screenings when safe to do so, and representing CFI as a community-funded arts organization.
  • Experience with design and marketing practices preferred.
  • A commitment to diversify the CFI membership base and create an inclusive, accessible and safe culture for CFI audiences and staff.
  • Ability to quickly and efficiently solve problems.
  • Able to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays.

DESIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Three years prior experience in a similar role.
    • Experience leading/coordinating a similar program.
    • Background in a nonprofit, arts-based or festival organization.
  • Knowledge of a variety of computer software applications in CRM, word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation, communication software (ie. Gmail, Google Drive, Excel, Trello, Slack)), and event ticketing software.
  • Knowledge of Raiser's Edge, Mailchimp, Emma, Agile Ticketing Solutions, and Eventbrite preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work will require occasional weekends and/or evenings and frequent transportation between film and event sites.
