Work Location: Based in CAIR's Santa Clara office. Requires some travel within the Bay Area (vehicle and driver's license required).

Term: Full-time, Occasional evenings/weekends/holidays required

Position Status: Exempt 

Reports to: Executive Director

Salary: $77,220- $85,580 annually, commensurate with skills and experience 

Requirements: Must have authorization to work in the United States and COVID-19 Vaccine

About the Role: The Communications Manager will create and implement a comprehensive media and public relations strategy that capitalizes on CAIR-SFBA's expertise and enhances CAIR's image within key constituencies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement an integrated, organization-wide strategic media and public relations plan that will allow CAIR-SFBA to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted audiences, including the media, public officials, and key influencers
  • Serve as lead point person on media interactions (editors, reporters, producers, and other media professionals) and actively cultivate and manage media relationships
  • Oversee strategic initiatives to target and engage activists, allies, and Muslim community members across all digital channels
  • Edit and review all external communications including press statements/releases, fact sheets, e-mails, e-newsletters, and action alerts
  • Pitch and secure stories to ensure coverage of issues of strategic importance including CAIR-SFBA's programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects
  • Review, edit, and proofread CAIR-CA publications including the annual report and other various reports
  • Serves as situation management and crisis communication leader and updates organizational crisis management plan as necessary
  • Manage and speak at various press conferences and events; prepare talking points, speeches, presentations, and other supporting material
  • Conduct media trainings for staff and community members
  • Collaborate with CAIR-CA and CAIR National Communications staff on press releases, programs, and initiatives
  • Manage CAIR-SFBA's social media vision and strategy
  • Manage and maintain CAIR-SFBA website with updated content
  • Supervise the Communications team including Communications Coordinator in day-to-day tasks and projects
  • Represent and/or speak publicly on behalf of CAIR-SFBA at partner and ally groups or organizations' meetings, events, and activities as needed
  • Draft, revise and keep current training programs slides and department guides and manuals
  • Participate in CAIR-SFBA's Management Team, including regular meetings, advice to executives, and facilitation of organizational goals
  • Other duties as assigned, dependent on organizational needs and employee skills

All CAIR staff are required to assist in general duties such as answering phones, weekly outreach, fundraising, and other office tasks.


  • Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree preferred -- in the field of Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations or related field
  • Three to five years of work experience in a communications/public relations role, including at minimum one-year managing staff
  • Experience working with media as an on-the-record spokesperson
  • Familiarity in communicating with the Muslim community
  • Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills
  • Experience developing and implementing communications strategies
  • Foundational understanding of design and visual elements and how to create simple yet effective graphics
  • Experience managing and writing copy for social media
  • Experience with Canva, Adobe photoshop/In-Design/Illustrator, WordPress, Constant Contact
  • High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical level
  • Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
  • Commitment to social justice and CAIR's mission and values
  • Familiarity, knowledge, and experience working with the American Muslim community
  • Flexibility to adjust and contribute to continually evolving work situations and changing priorities
