FLSA: Full Time/Non-Exempt

Salary/Hourly Rate: $19-$22/hour

The Communications Coordinator will report directly to the Director of Communications and Marketing and work closely with them and all departments on a daily basis. The Coordinator will perform various support tasks to support all media relations, internal and external speaking engagements, and content development. This person should have a positive attitude and eagerness to learn. They will develop relationships with local, regional, state, and national media and should be comfortable and confident with starting from scratch as they seek out new media and speaking opportunities. They will be an advocate for their colleagues and look for opportunities for BP experts to shine and also to celebrate and share their successes with internal team members. The Coordinator will help develop BP stories, promote events and programs, update media placement grids, track and capture local and national speaking engagements, and keep tabs on national and local news trends around major environmental, and invertebrate conservation, science and education news stories and identifying trends, ad hoc projects. This person will be a strong writer and we would love to have a good copy editor.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Media Relations
    • Draft press releases, media advisories, fact sheets, calendar listings, media pitches
    • Pitch media and assist with media prep and interviews
    • Research media and create specific, targeted media lists
    • Learn and use Meltwater media database platform
    • Monitor, track, and capture BP media placements and enter details into media coverage grid
    • Create metric reports
  • Internal Communications Support
    • Assist with internal "BP Team Engagement Series" by populating and managing quarterly calendar of events, create and distribute announcements, coordinate day-of set up for events and speaker
    • Create monthly recap report of media coverage and distribute to all BP team members
    • Create monthly communications update board slides
    • Help update BP Communications Tool Kit with new content
  • Speaking Engagements
    • Help research, identify, and conduct outreach to local business/networking organizations for BP speaking opportunities
    • Manage national conference and meeting grid, updating with new conferences, dates and pertinent information and alert senior leaders of deadlines
  • Content Creation
    • Maintain organizational editorial calendar
    • Help create and gather content for monthly newsletters
    • Write content for website as needed
  • Conduct miscellaneous communications and administrative support

Qualifications/Experience:


  • 2-3 years professional experience
  • Communications, journalism, or marketing major or experience preferred
  • Writing skills and writing samples
  • Media relations experience a plus
  • Must be able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced, quickly changing environment.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving with strong decision-making skills.
  • Professional-level verbal and written communications skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, great attention to detail, the ability to develop strong relationships with both internal and external audiences/stakeholders.
  • In-depth understanding of entire MS Office suite. (Especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
