The managing editor is a newsroom leader who ensures the print and digital products that are produced by The State News are of high quality, original and consistent. They also ensure day-to-day content production is meeting newsroom-wide standards. Core duties of the managing editor include overseeing centerpiece stories, or CPs, managing the intern reporters, editing articles when necessary, and helping reporters develop a multimedia mindset.


  • Acts as the primary editor to respond to issues with the CP, including missed deadlines, improper sourcing, etc.
  • Keeps a calendar of which CPs will run in which issue and adjusts the calendar when necessary.
  • Determines each issue's "A story," the story expected to run as the CP, and "B story," the backup story that can be used as a CP if issues with the A story arise.
  • Works closely with reporters writing CPs to provide guidance and suggestions during the reporting process and during the draft editing process.
  • Communicates with desk editors and other departments to provide them with resources they might need on a day-to-day basis.
  • Assists the editor-in-chief with interviewing applicants and orienting new staff members.
  • Present on paper production days to ensure a smooth process, to respond when issues arise, and to help send the paper to print.
  • Assists the editor-in-chief in all assigned duties.
  • Oversees the photo cropping and placement and layout and paste-up of editorial and advertising copy so that the paper may be completed and published in an orderly manner and by the deadline.
  • Maintains a strong presence in the newsroom and motivates the team to meet deadlines.
  • Directs workflow by communicating with different State News departments and working with editors and reporters to establish content deadlines.
  • Understands what content is being produced at The State News and makes recommendations on where coverage could be strengthened or expanded upon.
  • With the editor-in-chief, anticipates and responds to issues with the paper's production.
  • Encourages and coaches reporters and editors to seek out stories that are creative, diverse, interesting, and respond to the needs and wants of the community.
  • Engages with offices across campus in order to cultivate new relationships with the community, and helps to maintain established relationships.
  • Attends, and helps to run, daily budget meetings in order to communicate with other newsroom staff.
  • Responds quickly to readers, as well as prominent college and city officials when the editor-in-chief is unable to do so to ensure strong connections throughout the community.
  • Encourages reporters and editors to think creatively when it comes to storytelling and helps them develop story packages when needed.
  • Meets regularly with the editor-in-chief to keep them updated on progress and any potential problems or concerns.
  • Attends and helps run daily budget meetings to determine when articles should be published.
  • Attends weekly editorial board meetings and contributes ideas for editorials and their personal opinion on editorial topics.
  • Attends weekly development meetings to provide updates on the progress of CPs and other projects and stories related to the managing editor role.
  • Helps ensure breaking news is covered quickly and effectively, and edits breaking news stories as needed.
  • Understands the importance of working outside of business hours to respond to breaking news.
  • Maintains regular newsroom office hours as assigned by the editor-in-chief.
  • Oversees the staff reporters (formerly interns) by managing their rotations among different desks and by providing them with resources and support.
