Tailings Engineer (Environmental Systems Engineer 3 or 4)

LOCATION: Columbus, MT (Greater Livingston/Billings Areas)

POSITION SUMMARY: The Tailings Management System Engineer will provide technical and operational guidance and support to the safe management of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) and assurance that the management of the facilities fully complies with the Group Tailings Management System (GTMS) and the Global Industry Standard for Tailings Management (GISTM).


  • Responsible for guiding individual site alignment with the GTMS, GISTM, and ICMM guidance
  • Provides engineering expertise for operation and construction of the TSFs as well as conduct studies related to new or future projects
  • Site Tailings Operation, Maintenance, and Surveillance (TOMS) champion
  • Site coordinator for the tailings management team
  • Technical writing for TSF documents, manuals, and training programs, as well as technical review of various reports from external consultants
  • Responsible for quality assurance of TSF monitoring systems, TSF construction, and TSF operation
  • Accountable for availability and maintenance of TSF monitoring systems
  • Coordinates engineering consultant oversight of TSF construction projects
  • Develops and maintains a system for tracking and reporting critical controls and TARPS
  • Trains site personnel on TOMS, GTMS, and Emergency Preparedness Plan
  • Responsible for conducting GISTM self-assessments and 3rd party conformance audits
  • Accountable for coordinating central repository for all tailings management documents
  • Coordinates and participates in quarterly EOR inspections, ITRB inspections, and periodic dam safety inspections


  • BS or MS Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field and minimum of 5 years experience with tailings management in the mining industry.
  • Ability to obtain a Professional Engineering designation within five (5) years
  • Systems-based work philosophy and direct experience with tailings management systems.
  • Strong leadership qualities: character, teamwork, communication, business sense, and vision.
  • Proficient in computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and database applications.


  • Specific experience developing a Tailings Management System a plus.
  • Engineer-in-Training Certification
