The Research Scientist is part of a collaborative team at OnLume that reports to the VP of Research to support preclinical and clinical research and conduct research for product development. The Research Scientist will engage in technical, translational, and clinical imaging research using fluorescence imaging with the goal of demonstrating its value in guiding surgical decisions and improving surgical outcomes.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • With direction, conduct literature review, perform statistical analysis, and develop databases to support preclinical and clinical research projects
  • Develop automated quantitative image processing and analysis algorithms (e.g. Python, MATLAB, C++)
  • Acquire and analyze image and system performance data on novel, cutting-edge imaging platforms
  • Assist in the design, administration, and execution of preclinical and clinical research protocols
  • Support internal product development research, including the design, prototyping, testing, and maintenance of optical imaging and illumination systems for next-generation imaging products
  • Support development and documentation of clinical workflows, use cases, user manuals, and training as needed
  • Actively contribute to conference submissions, peer-reviewed manuscripts, presentations, and grant applications
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of both internal and external innovators (e.g., surgeons, engineers, chemists, biologists, and contract research organizations (CROs))
  • Facilitate, attend, and contribute to all research and key study meetings, including planning and training

Critical skills and abilities:

  • BS with 5+ years' experience, MS with 2+ years' experience, or PhD in medical physics, biomedical engineering, or similar field
  • Experience in image acquisition and analysis of medical images
  • Experience in data management and database development
  • Experience in scientific writing for peer-reviewed publications and/or grants
  • Experience in preclinical research with knowledge of IACUC and applicable US regulations
  • Experience in clinical research with knowledge of Good Clinical Practices and applicable US regulations
  • Strong interpersonal and detail-oriented organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to prioritize workloads and work independently while maintaining team focus
  • Ability to travel (<10% of the time)
