History Curator w/ Military, Politics, & Civic Activism Focus

The History Curator is an integral part of the Curatorial Department at the Ohio History Connection in Columbus, Ohio. This position works independently, with and in support of colleagues to manage, develop, use and interpret the History Collections and related materials through cataloging, deaccessioning, acquisitions and by contributing to exhibits, programs and the History Blog.

The role of the History Curator will be shaped for the next several years by a project to build a new collections storage facility and move the museum collections. The position will be tasked with curating military collections and must have an interest in curating political and civics collections and broadening historical, social and cultural knowledge of Ohio and the United States to include underrepresented people including Latinx, American Indians and recent immigrants. This position will report to the Manager, Curatorial Department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assess, catalog, deaccession and/or dispose of historic objects in the collections facility daily
  • Contribute to growing CollectionSpace, our digital collections database, and use the database to complete collections processes daily
  • Contribute to shaping the content of the collections daily by evaluating donation and purchase offers, which will dictate the collection's strengths and potential uses in the future
  • Create thoughtful collection criteria bi-monthly that establish what a particular collecting area should be comprised of, taking into account the collection's relevance to Ohio history and how that collection is used
  • Actively grow a subset of the collections and expand our knowledge through community outreach, collecting, writing, presentations and programming as time permits after the move to the new facility in two years
  • Assist with inventorying collections monthly as part of move preparations
  • Write for the OHC History blog quarterly
  • Answer collections-related research questions daily
  • Fulfill media and filming requests as needed, usually several times per year
  • Participate in delivering quality public programming at the Ohio History Connection quarterly
  • Contribute to exhibits as a content expert, usually no more than one exhibit per year

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree (or higher) in history, public history, museum studies or a related field from an accredited university OR equivalent work experience in a related field. Minimum of 3 years' experience working with historic objects in museums or a related field.


  • Experience curating military collections and an interest in curating political and civics collections as well as smaller subsets of the collections in the future.
  • Demonstrate potential to build collections; engage in training to achieve greater level of competency.
  • Work both independently and with and in support of colleagues to complete work; set priorities and appropriate boundaries in order to fully focus on projects with clarity and feeling of accomplishment.
  • Demonstrate potential to communicate well in written and verbal communications, including informal mediums like email and meetings and formal presentations.
