Position Overview

The Adventure Director is a core member of the First Light Wilderness Therapy Leadership team and reports directly to the Program Director. The Adventure Director will plan, implement, and evaluate adventure activities, field operations, and staff training, ensuring that programming is developmentally appropriate, enriching and currently responsive to safety and procedural guidelines. The Mission of this job is to create intentional, therapeutic adventure trips for each student.


Responsibilities:

  • Supervises Adventure Specialists
  • Coordinates adventure, education and mastery activities
  • Ensures policies and procedures are always followed
  • Assists with Family Intensive Workshops
  • Coordinates and conducts trainings for staff
  • Ensures programs are up to date with industry standards
  • Manages all forms related to outdoor adventure activities or field operations
  • Provides monthly and annual reports (as needed) to Program Director on program evaluations, staff performance, and program performance
  • Selects equipment and supplies needed for planned activities; maintains and organizes equipment and supplies
  • Prepares facilities and equipment for activities; cleans and maintains equipment
  • Ensures that all rules are followed by students and staff; maintains clear and positive communication with team members
  • Attends staff meetings
  • Administers First Aid and reports injuries/accidents/illnesses to Program Director
  • Reports facility issues and supply needs to Program Director
  • Fill in as Field Instructor as needed
  • Assists in placement, movement, travel, and needs of each group
  • Assists in enrollments, discharge, tours, and visits
  • Schedules outreach and volunteer activities
  • Ensures that field daily structures are followed by students and staff; maintains clear and positive communication with team members
  • Other duties as needed
  • Be on call with cell phone and radio and be available to respond to field crisis situations, provide on-call field support assistance to field instructors, and on occasion receive nightly check-ins from field staff.

Requirements:

  • Must hold a bachelor's degree or comparable experience working in the adventure or outdoor field with at-risk youth is required.
  • Previous experience managing staff required.
  • Three (3) years previous experience working with youth in wilderness/camp/adventure/experiential learning/environmental education programming
  • Adventure activity facilitation preferred (rock climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, etc)
  • Minimum age is 21 years old
  • Must be able to work outdoors and participate in activities and programming
  • Must possess (or obtain within 3 months) and maintain current Wilderness First Responder and CPR certification and must complete company provided SCM (Safe Crisis Management).
  • Must possess organizational skills, be enthusiastic, adaptable, dependable, and responsible
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50+ pounds for extended durations
  • Must be able to pass a Background Criminal Investigation.
  • Must hold a valid Driver's License with clean driving record.
