The Director of Individual Giving will play a critical role in advancing the New England Aquarium, securing funds to create vibrant oceans for generations to come. Reporting to the Vice President of Development, the Director will manage a portfolio of highly-rated prospects and donors through identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. With a proven ability to inspire others, the Director will manage a team of front-line fundraisers to achieve both revenue growth and donor outreach goals. The ideal candidate will bring an entrepreneurial spirit and will build a robust pipeline of 5-7 figure gift prospects, meeting individual and team goals for annual donor visits and revenue growth.

This is a full-time, regular position working Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm. Flexibility for a limited amount of remote work may be considered. Occasional travel may be required.
Leadership and Fundraising
- Oversee and manage all aspects of individual giving. Drive pipeline development, prospect identification & research, strategic relationship development, and gift solicitations. Lead strategy and activity to build donor trust, financial investment, engagement and loyalty.
- Build and manage a portfolio of 100 major gift prospects with an emphasis on 6-7 figure gifts and bringing new donors to the aquarium; support executive staff in outreach to the portfolio.
- Manage and empower a team of front-line fundraisers. With the VP of Development, develop and track revenue and activity metrics for gift officers and the Annual Giving Program and create gift officer portfolios. Identifies and develops, as appropriate, new constituencies for potential inclusion in the Aquarium pipeline.
- Lead prospect strategy meetings with gift officers and related staff.
- Develop and manage a robust stewardship program for high-level Aquarium donors.
- With the VP of Development and the CEO, establish short- and long-term philanthropic objectives for the organization, matching institutional priorities to individual giving prospect interests.
- At the request of the VP and CEO, provide support to Trustees and volunteer leaders who secure funds and leverage their connections in the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual gift prospects and donors.
- Oversee development of proposals, appeal letters, and stewardship reports for Trustees and major donors.
- Collaborate across departments to maximize pipeline development, donor stewardship, and best practices in individual giving operations, including collaboration with to include NEAq Members in pipeline development.
- Represent the New England Aquarium's mission, vision, and impact to constituencies through the region.
Program Planning and Budget
- As a member of the senior development team, participate in the development of strategic long-term plans for sustained program growth and contributed income, including capital and mini-campaigns and other targeted or special initiatives.
- Develop an annual operating plan for Individual Giving, detailing the action plan in support of monetary goals, including metrics for the performance of the program and team members.
- Provide routine and special reports to the CEO and volunteer leadership as appropriate.
- Perform other position-related duties, as assigned.
Minimum Training and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree required; advanced degree preferred.
- A minimum of 8 years or more of demonstrated success in fundraising for mission-driven organizations.
- Proven success cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding 6-7 figure gifts, and building a pipeline of new supporters.
- Demonstrated success in developing best practices in gift policies, cultivation & solicitation strategies, gift administration, and meeting/exceeding revenue and donor outreach goals.
- Demonstrated effective leadership and proven initiative to manage inspire and counsel front-line gift officers to achieve results.
- Campaign experience required, including experience in the design of comprehensive prospect pipelines for contributed income, both outright and planned, annual and multi-year commitments.

- A passion for the mission of the New England Aquarium and the ability to match donor interests with organizational priorities to create joyful giving experiences for portfolio donors.
- Proven record of writing proposals for significant projects/gifts directed to individuals.
- A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and to serving the needs of a diverse population.
- An entrepreneurial spirit and understanding of prospecting/pipeline building at a non-university or hospital setting.
- Experience with planned giving a plus.
- Strong sense of ethical conduct that will inspire confidence and motivation with the proven ability to persuade colleagues and donor prospects, while maintaining confidentiality in all matters as they relate to sensitive donor issues.
- Highly effective oral and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills.
- Strong strategic and analytic skills, demonstrated problem-solving ability.
- Knowledge of and experience using Blackbaud's Raiser's Edge or other donor databases required.
