Reporting to CMO, the Director, Public Relations, manages the department and team responsible for developing and implementing strategic communications strategies that advance the Museum of Science's role and reputation with key local, regional, national, and international audiences, including the media, general public, educators, public officials, and science/technology industry. The Director, Public Relations will have a strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging that will reinforce the Museum's mission to "inspire a lifelong love of science in everyone." This position supports the Museum's initiatives with the goals of increasing awareness and changing perceptions about the Museum's role in public science learning, our values and our impact in society. Strategic thinking and strong writing skills will help to articulate the Museum's mission/vision/strategy, product portfolio (in Museums, Classroom and Online), institutional messaging, social media support, thought leadership platform, advocacy efforts, crisis communications, and more. The Director, Public Relations works closely with the President and CMO, as well as collaboratively across the organization, to ensure tight strategic and tactical coordination of all communications activities (messaging, outreach efforts, content, calendaring) with other marketing channels and the overall organization to maximize impact. This position manages a department and budget, as well as the external public relations agency, to ensure that all activities ladder up to overarching institutional objectives.


  • Manage departmental activities including management of 3-4 direct reports.
  • Manage a $500K budget directly.
  • Collaborate on management of $3M marketing and communications budget.
  • Manage thought-leadership platform of Museum President, including drafting/editing 6-8 op-eds annually, 100+ tweets annually, 25+ LinkedIn articles annually, remarks for 10+ events annually.
  • Increase and develop relationships to approximately 2,000 media contacts, growing our impact locally, and expanding our footprint nationally and internationally.
  • Lead communication efforts for 4-5 public-facing crisis situations annually.
  • Collaborate on the Museum's social media channels with over 200 posts annually to serve a combined audience of 225K.
  • Oversee the production and distribution of a wide variety of media relations department content including ~100+ press releases, alerts, media advisories, fact sheets, press packages, bios, position statements, op-eds, articles, and other communications on an annual basis.
  • Develop and oversee the execution of 40+ public and/or press events.
  • Oversee and/or respond to 10-20 weekly incoming requests from media and 40 film and television inquiries. Provide oversight and guidance for the press openings and ongoing media coverage of permanent exhibits (2-3 annually), traveling exhibits (1-2 annually), online offerings and partnerships, Omni Theater shows (2-3 annually), Planetarium openings (1-2 annually), Subspace events (20+ annually), Town Halls (6-8 annually), advancement and other ad hoc events (10+ annually).
  • Oversee incoming requests weekly -- ranging from local and national media, broadcast requests, and film and television crews annually.


Full-time, 40 hours / week, Monday-Friday.


CMO, Marketing, Strategy and Communications


  • Bachelors of Science or Arts degree
  • 10 or more years of media relations and communications experience
  • Demonstrated experience writing, editing and managing written communications
  • Demonstrated progressive experience in public relations
  • Experience developing strategic, integrated communication plans
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and understanding of crisis communications
  • Interpersonal skills, including managing and building team
  • Demonstrated budget management skills


Exempt (Salaried). $115,000-$125,000 / year
