The Zoo's conservation programs circle the globe - from cooperative programs in China for giant pandas to local efforts to save the Louisiana pine snake. Summary: The Memphis Zoo has an exciting internship opportunity with the Northwest Passage/Teton Trek team. Interns will work with keepers to gain firsthand experience on all aspects of animal husbandry as it relates to the animal's physiological and psychological well-being, and for the general maintenance of enclosures and habitats. The ideal candidate for this position should be seeking a career in the animal care field and enjoy working in a team environment.

The Northwest Passage/Teton Trek team cares for polar bears, black bears, brown bears, California sea lions, gray wolves, American elk, bald eagles and a variety of waterfowl.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists in the facilitation of formal and informal public presentations to engage guests and provide a positive guest experience.
  • Actively observes animals' behavior, checking for any signs of illness or disorder; reports irregularities and abnormal behavior to Keepers and Team Leads.
  • Prepares daily diets and maintains accurate records of assigned animals.
  • Appropriately cleans and disinfects assigned animal enclosures/habitats according to written protocols and ensures a sanitary and safe environment.
  • Completes a special project covering observations, research, enrichment or another area of interest.

Program Overview and Requirements

The program spans 10-12 weeks and participants will be scheduled 40hrs per week. This internship is unpaid, and housing will not be provided. Internship will begin in February and end in May (specific dates are flexible. All applicants must have completed their 1st year at an accredited college or university. Ideal program participants must have completed college level coursework in the fields of Zoology, Biology or a Science related field and have a GPA of 3.0 or greater. Selected participants are responsible for a $50 volunteer fee to cover shirt, badge, background check and TB test.

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, chemicals and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, or moderately loud while on Zoo grounds.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear. The employee is constantly required to use hands and fingers to feel, handle or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
