The China internship provides the unique opportunity to work alongside keepers and gain firsthand experience with the husbandry of Giant Pandas as well as a variety of other species. As one of only three U.S. zoos with giant pandas, interns will be able to learn about and assist with the daily care, enrichment, training, exhibit maintenance, record keeping, and conservation of these fascinating animals. In addition to giant pandas, the China team cares for a diverse collection of red pandas, Francois' langurs, Sulawesi macaques, Pere David's deer, waterfowl, pheasants, and various songbirds. The ideal candidate for this position should be a hard-working individual who enjoys working in a team setting and is interested in pursing a career in animal care.

Essential Functions:

· Assists in the facilitation of formal and informal public presentations to engage guests and provide a positive guest experience.

· Actively observes animals' behavior, checking for any signs of illness or disorder; reports irregularities and abnormal behavior to Keepers and Team Leads.

· Prepares daily diets and maintains accurate records of assigned animals.

· Appropriately cleans and disinfects assigned animal enclosures/habitats according to written protocols and ensures a sanitary and safe environment.

· Completes a special project covering observations, research, enrichment or another area of interest.

Program Overview and Requirements

· The program spans 10-12 weeks and participants will be scheduled 40hrs per week. This internship is unpaid, and housing will not be provided. Spring internships begin in February and end in May (deadline for application is due Jan 1). Summer internships will begin in May and end in August (deadline for application April 1). Fall internships begin in August and end in November (deadline for application due July 1) All applicants must have completed their 1st year at an accredited college or university. Ideal program participants must have completed college level coursework in the fields of Zoology, Biology or a Science related field and have a GPA of 3.0 or greater. Selected participants are responsible for a $50 volunteer fee to cover shirt, badge, background check and TB test.

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, chemicals and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, or moderately loud while on Zoo grounds.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear. The employee is constantly required to use hands and fingers to feel, handle or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
