ABOUT LAWS

Founded in 1984, LAWS mission is to provide victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse with safety, hope, and empowerment services to live as survivors free from effects of violence. LAWS is Loudoun County's designated nonprofit to provide domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse survivors with these services and supports. All services are free, confidential, and voluntary.

LAWS supports adult, youth, and child victims through shelter, a 24/7 hotline, therapy, legal services, support groups, advocacy, and community outreach. LAWS also operates The Resourceful Woman, a thrift store benefiting LAWS services, and it runs the Loudoun Child Advocacy Center (CAC). The Loudoun CAC promotes healing for children and protective caregivers impacted by child abuse through a unified and coordinated community response, including use of a nationally accredited model for child forensic interviews. The CAC also connects families with resources as part of the CAC's coordinated service model. At the Loudoun CAC, the child's best interest is the priority.

The Role of a Forensic Interviewer

A Forensic Interviewer at LAWS conduct forensic interviews with children and youth who are alleged to be victims of sexual and/or severe physical abuse or to have witnessed violence. The forensic interviewer is specially trained to use a research-based interview protocol in a trauma-informed and developmentally appropriate manner. The forensic interviewer also actively participates in the CAC Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) to review cases and problem-solve challenges, assists with scheduling forensic interviews, and provides court testimony when needed. As part of the LAWS' Child Advocacy Center team, this position is committed to the philosophy, mission, and programs of LAWS, which includes a commitment to survivor's and children's issues, sharing a belief in helping to create a society free from violence, and in working in a cooperative environment.

LAWS will provide the forensic interview training to a qualified candidate who has not previously been trained in the child forensic interview methods used.

COMPETENCIES

We're seeking a compassionate professional who has direct work experience with children who are deemed "at-risk" or have had adverse childhood experiences. A successful child forensic interviewer balances analytical thinking with empathy and a love of children. In this role, the person also must have an aptitude for public speaking under high pressure.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree from an accredited university required; preference for degree in psychology, counseling, social work, sociology, criminal justice, or related field.
Minimum of one year experience working directly with children or youth who have experienced abuse, maltreatment, and/or other forms of trauma. Prefer candidate with prior experience conducting forensic interviews.
Bicultural/bilingual (Spanish-English) preferred.

WORK SCHEDULE

Our rewarding full-time position typically works 9 am - 5 pm in Leesburg, VA. Periodic evenings and weekends may be needed.
