Education: High School Diploma or GED. Completion of an accredited line technician career development program preferred.

Experience: At least two years of experience as a line technician with an electric utility OR two years' experience as a line technician with an electric utility and completion of an accredited line technician career development program.

Knowledge: A working knowledge of electricity and the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC). A working knowledge of hand tools, line construction vehicles and equipment, and aerial bucket trucks. A working knowledge of system maps and Rural Utilities Services (RUS) specifications. A working knowledge of first-aid and CPR and pole top rescue.

Skills: Ability to use a variety of hand tools and to operate line construction and maintenance equipment and vehicles. Ability to read and follow system maps, RUS specifications, and staking sheets. Ability to climb poles and perform work from pole tops and aerial bucket trucks. Ability to perform pole top rescue and bucket rescue. Ability to administer CPR and first-aid. Must have a North Carolina commercial driver's license. Must satisfactorily complete tests and/or practical demonstrations for advancement to Line technician First Class. Must be able to read, write and do arithmetic. Use of computer and other office equipment as required.

Work Conditions: About 5% in office/95% in field; on call during emergencies; occasional overtime; infrequent overnight travel. Must be able to work outside during extreme weather conditions including: very low temperatures, very high temperatures and during storms with high winds, rain, and/or snow.

Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting: up to 50 lbs. - floor to waist frequently/waist to shoulders & above frequently
  • Reaching: both arms frequently
  • Carrying: up to 50 lbs. - floor to waist frequently/waist to shoulders & above frequently
  • Range of Motion: Frequent: bending, squatting, climbing, twisting, kneeling, grasping/pinching, push/pull, repetitive finger motion, and wrist flexion/extension, driving, walking, and standing.

Major Responsibilities: (performed with strict observance of safety rules and adherence to safe working conditions)

  1. Performs routine work on de-energized overhead and underground distribution lines, and works on energized overhead and underground distribution lines under the direction of a line supervisor/ maintenance supervisor or lead Line Technician/ lead maintenance technician.
  2. Strings, sags, and deadend conductors of all sizes on poles or other structures.
  3. Installs and connects transformers, fuse cutouts, arrestors, switches, oil circuit reclosers, and sectionalizers.
  4. Frames and installs pole assemblies either on the ground or in the air.
  5. Splices broken conductors, resets broken poles, replaces damaged electrical apparatus and facilities, resets reclosers and sectionalizers, and replaces fuses in cutouts.
  6. Makes up and installs all types of guys.
  7. Performs maintenance work on distribution lines.
  8. Inspects distribution lines regularly, reports any required maintenance to line supervisor, and makes repairs as directed.
  9. Assists in installation and maintenance of substations and regulating equipment.
  10. Digs pole and anchor holes, and sets and aligns poles and anchors.
  11. Operates bucket truck and digger.

Rotates being on-call after normal working hours to provide electric services.
