The Corporate Controller will provide hands-on execution and administration of the accounting function and will work to establish strong financial controls and compliance. This position will execute the monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting close procedures and ensures the timeliness, efficiency, and accuracy of internal financial reporting to management.  The position will also oversee the payroll and purchasing functions and will work directly with the CFO to support the SEC and external reporting functions, as well as, creating a robust financial planning and analysis process in order to meet financial and strategic objectives. The Corporate Controller reports to the CFO and is based in San Diego, CA.

Specific Responsibilities: 

  • Executes on the day-to-day accounting operations which includes; accounts payable, general ledger, clinical trial accruals, tax compliance, payroll, purchasing, banking and cash management  
  • Implements a robust SEC and external reporting process upon successful completion of an IPO (10Q, 10K, Proxy & SOX compliance) 
  • Ensures the effectiveness of internal controls and integrity of accounting records and resulting financial statements 
  • Develops a refined clinical accrual/cost forecast model and work cross-functionally with the R&D organization to ensure proper clinical trial accruals on an ongoing basis
  • Identifies, implements and ensures an ERP system is configured and maintained to optimally support not only the company's long-term accounting needs, but can also provide input and support for a robust financial planning process and periodic reporting requirements 
  • Leads the annual budgeting process and subsequent forecast updates with actual financial results 
  • Develops effective goals and objectives for the finance function to monitor and measure progress against corporate initiatives and departmental goals  
  • Acts as a trusted partner across the organization
  • Ensures the timely completion of financial and tax audits 
  • Supports ongoing financial planning and analysis and financial forecasting 
  • Conducts periodic variance analysis of expenses and capital expenditures 
  • Oversees/executes payroll, equity compensation and stock administration activities with 3rd party vendors
  • Coordinates with insurance brokers regarding various policies, such as D&O and liability
  • Completes ad-hoc financial reporting and analysis, as well as, special projects as needed


  • BA/BS in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred
  • 10+ years relevant finance and accounting experience including previous experience as a Controller, as well as, experience in public company accounting 
  • Experience working in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry, required
  • Strong financial systems expertise; preferably with ERP implementations
  • Advanced knowledge of finance, accounting, clinical trial accruals, budgeting, tax, banking, cash management, cost control principles, and GAAP 
  • Demonstrated ability in leading and building an accounting function from the ground-up, including recruitment, development and retention of top industry talent
  • Proven ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and projections 
  • Experience in developing and implementing financial policies, procedures, and initiatives
