POSITION SUMMARY: The Advocate Department provides comprehensive advocacy services to individuals who have experienced sexual assault, domestic violence, family violence or elder abuse. The Therapist will provide face-to-face, individual and/or group counseling to primary and secondary survivors of rape, sexual assault and elder abuse. The Therapist will provide education related to trauma, assist clients with identifying sources of trauma and coping skills, link clients to external providers and collaborate with other service providers including internal case managers to ensure appropriate care. Services may be provided in person and/or virtually.


Essential Functions of the Position Include, But Are Not Limited to:


  • Maintain a commitment to the mission and work of Crisis Services with a deep appreciation for and sensitivity to the guiding principles of the organization.
  • Possess strong knowledge of domestic violence, sexual violence, crisis intervention, and community wide resources.
  • Phone outreach and screening for service eligibility
  • Provide crisis intervention, assessment and short- term counseling to primary and secondary survivors of rape/sexual assault and elder abuse.
  • Provide Individual Therapy.
  • Complete Intake Assessments and Treatment Plans.
  • Support Group Facilitation, including development of curriculum.
  • Data entry in client database.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments within organization to maintain referral process for therapy services.
  • Provide visits/outreach sessions to clients when needed.
  • Provide information, referral, and advocacy services.
  • Participate in related training for rape/sexual assault and elder abuse.
  • Participate in mandatory agency meetings and quality assurance activities.
  • Must successfully complete core Advocate Rape Crisis Counselor/Domestic Violence Advocate certification.
  • Other duties as assigned by Director or the Program Supervisor for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the department and organization.
  • On Call: Requires mandatory on call responsibilities as per agency and policy guidelines in addition to regular work schedule; which includes:
    • Hospital On Call: If activated, may be required to respond to local county emergency rooms to provide crisis intervention and supportive services to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, family violence and/or elder abuse and/or provide support to Volunteers who are on call.
    • Hotline On Call: If activated, required to respond to agency to answer local and statewide calls to provide immediate support, information, referral, telephone counseling, safety planning and advocacy to callers on the New York State Domestic and Sexual Violence Hotline, Statewide Chat/Textline, the New York State Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Statewide Rape Crisis Hotline, serving incarcerated survivors, and local county hotlines.

Position Qualifications:


  • EDUCATION: Masters Degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling or equivalent required.
  • LICENSURE: NY State License required.
  • EXPERIENCE: Minimum 1 (one) year professional experience working in human service industry; preferably providing direct counseling services in sexual assault and domestic violence work for trauma survivors. Experience with crisis situations and quickly establishing rapport with clients preferred. Demonstrated ability and experience working with diverse populations.
