CRESA provides paid training to become a 911 Call Taker and/or Dispatcher. CRESA hires a 911 Call Taker and/or Dispatch Trainee then after successfully passing the training and probation the candidate will be placed into one of those positions based on availability and seniority. Call Takers answer and process 911 calls and perform Emergency Medical Dispatch for callers with medical response needs. In addition to all Call Taking duties, 911 Communications Dispatchers also dispatch police, fire and medical services.


  • Must be at least 18 years or older.
  • Must be able to legally work in the United States.
  • One or more years full-time work experience with intensive customer interaction preferred.
  • To be considered as a lateral 911 candidate, must have successfully passed 911 Call Taking or Dispatcher training probation plus have 2 years on the job experience at a PSAP in the United States.
  • Excellent computer skills, knowledge and experience. Ability to monitor 4+ computer screens.
  • Accurate and rapid data entry.
  • Attention to detail is essential.
  • Proven critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to memorize and recall details, codes and procedures.
  • Ability to work all days and hours.


  1. Application Screening – (Pass/Fail) – All applicants must complete a job application and meet the minimum job qualifications. Candidates who do not meet these qualifications will be notified.
    1. Felony convictions are disqualifying
    2. Unavailable to work weekends, holidays and overtime is disqualifying

  2. CritiCall Examination– (Pass/Fail, then ranked score) – Email notification of scheduling will occur 2-3 weeks following the deadline to apply.
    1. CritiCall is a computerized job skills test focused on data entry speed and accuracy, working memory, multi-tasking, decision making and following instructions.
    2. Candidates are generally notified of their CritiCall score within 2 weeks after completing exam.
  3. Good, Bad & Ugly Orientation of 911 Call Taking Dispatch – (required) this will be in conjunction with the CritiCall Examination. Candidates are required to sign an acknowledgement of the presentation and their availability to work all days and hours.
  4. Test Ranking (Optional) – If there are 30 or more eligible candidates, they may be test ranked, to determine the top thirty (30) candidates that may immediately proceed to the Oral Board Interview.
  1. Panel Interview – (Pass/Fail) –CRESA conducts oral panel interviews.
    1. Eligible candidates will receive an invitation – dates to be determined.
  2. Dispatch "Sit-Along" – (required) Candidates that pass the oral board interview will be notified when to schedule a 2 hour "sit along" with a 911 Call-Taker Dispatcher.
  3. Final Interview – (Scored, must receive at least 60% or higher to pass) –CRESA conducts behavioral interview with Operations Manager.
    1. Eligible candidates will receive an invitation – dates to be determined.
  4. Eligible List – (Ranked scoring) – Eligible candidates will be ranked based on 40% of their test scores and 60% of the Second Oral Board Interview score.
  5. A special eligibility list for laterals may be created at the request of the Operations Manager which moves them to the top of the ranking order.
  6. Background Investigation – (Pass/Fail, conducted in rank order) – Requires detailed Personal History form and comprehensive background investigation with elements including but not limited to candidate's employment history, education, job and personal references, criminal history, driving record check, etc.
    1. Felony convictions are disqualifying
  7. Conditional Job Offer – (Offered in ranked order) – When a vacancy is available, the candidate will receive a conditional job offer of employment, contingent upon successfully passing the post-offer processes.
  8. Post-Offer Process (Pass/Fail) – Post offer processes include a psychological evaluation, fingerprinting screen, general medical examinations, drug test and baseline hearing and vision tests.
  9. Training and Probation – (Pass/Fail) – Average training duration ranges from 8-16 months.
  10. Reapplication Process – Applicants removed or withdrawn from the recruitment are eligible to reapply during any future recruitment, unless
    1. Applicant withdraws during, fails or is removed from Background Investigation, Post-Offer processes or Training / Probation. (Ineligible to reapply in future);
    2. Applicant takes and fails CritiCall examination three (3) separate times (3 year suspension);
    3. Applicant participates in and fails Panel Interview three (3) times will be subject to 3 year suspension of applying. If participant fails Panel Interview four (4) times they will be ineligible to reapply;
    4. Applicant participates in and fails Final Interview subject to 3 year suspension of applying. If participant failed Final Interview two (2) times they will be ineligible to reapply;
    5. Exceptions to this policy will be made at the Director's discretion
