Job Summary:

Under immediate direction of Traffic Manager, performs maintenance and repairs to city owned Traffic lights, making signs, creating street striping and markings. Work involves installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signal control equipment and devices. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.


Essential Job Functions:

a. Trouble shoots electrical problems, programming of various types of computerized traffic signal controllers, signal timing, maintain loop detectors and cameras.

b. Troubleshoots in the field and restores operation to traffic signal control devices that have undergone electrical, electronic equipment or electrical wire/cable failure due to vehicular accidents, vandalism, adverse weather, or construction crews;

c. Evaluate conditions of street signs inside of city limits.

d. Coordinates traffic investigations and street surveys.

e. Performs wiring of control cabinets prior to field installation.

f. Maintain accurate records of time and materials used in the maintenance and repair history of all electrical equipment.

g. Performs related work and reports as assigned.


Conditions of Employment:


  1. Applicant will be subject to a complete background investigation. Incomplete, inaccurate and/or failure to report information will cause the applicant rejection from consideration.
  2. Applicant must take and pass a pre-employment drug test administered by the City of Edinburg at the City's expense.
  3. Must have a current valid class "B" driver's license from the Texas Department of Public Safety with a satisfactory driving record.
  4. Achieve IMSA Level I and Level II Certifications
  5. Bilingual English/Spanish Preferred.

Required Education:

High school diploma, G.E.D. or equivalency.

Education Preference:

Community college, vocational business, technical, or correspondence school certificates from IMSA (International Municipal Signal Association) are likely sources.

Required Work Experience:

Requires Two (2) year experience in traffic signals, basic knowledge in the electrical field.

Experience Preference:

Three (3) years' experience in related fields.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities


a. Requires a working knowledge of City and National electrical codes, and safety and accident prevention procedures.

b. Work requires regular interaction involving exchange and receipt of information.

c. Required to be on standby "On Call waiting to be engaged to work" when necessary.

d. Performs the duty assignment after receiving detailed instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results with little room for deviation.

e. Work requires a comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the work environment of the organization.

f. Intermediate computer skills in a Microsoft Windows programs, database management, and record keeping.

g. Skill in utilizing special electrical tools.

h. Ability to read blueprints and schematics.
