Job Summary:

Performs complex work in the operation of light equipment. Work involves coordinating the maintenance, operation, and repairs of equipment. Works under general supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Job Functions:

a. Operates a variation of light equipment involved in construction and maintenance projects, such as rollers, graders, backhoes, front-end loaders, forklifts, dump trucks, or bulldozers.

b. Performs preventive maintenance inspections, routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment.

c. Ensures adherence to safety standards when operating equipment.

d. Prepares and maintains records, files, and reports on timekeeping, equipment, inventory, and accidents.

e. Maintain a variety of records relating to inspections and maintenance activity.

f. Performs preventive maintenance on the equipment.

g. Inspects equipment to ensure that it meets specifications.

h. May perform other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, accidents, and hazardous material spills.

i. Provides support to other divisions within the Department as needed.

j. Performs other related work and reports as assigned.

Conditions of Employment:

Applicant will be subject to a complete background investigation. Incomplete, inaccurate and/or failure to report information will cause the applicant rejection from consideration.

a. Applicant must take and pass a pre-employment drug test administered by the City of Edinburg at the City's expense.

b. Applicant must have a current and valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with Air Brake Endorsement from the Texas Department of Public Safety with a satisfactory driving record and insurable by the City's current insurance carrier.

c. A Minimum of a Class "B" required with a Class "A" License Preferred.

d. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Required Education:

High school diploma, GED or equivalency.

Education Preference:

Community college, vocational, business, technical, or correspondence school certifications are likely sources.

Required Work Experience:

One (1) year experience in operating light equipment along with thorough knowledge of safety procedures.

Experience Preference:

Two (2) years of related experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

a. Requires a working knowledge of proper operation, equipment repairs and operation, safety precautions, and occupational hazards involved in operating equipment.

b. Job requires working evenings, weekends, holidays and during hurricane or other emergencies, when needed.

c. Required to be on stand-by (on call waiting to be engaged to work) when necessary.

d. Work requires the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.

e. Work requires regular interaction involving exchange and receipt of information.

f. Normally performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results.

g. Work requires the use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the organization.

i. Able to operate vehicles and equipment safely in area of high pedestrian and vehicular traffic; knowledge of repair and maintenance of hydraulic systems and of diesel equipment.

j. Knowledge of the geography of the City of Edinburg.

  • City Vehicle/Light to Medium Trucks & Equipment
  • General work tools
  • Gloves/Safety vest/Safety glasses/Ear plugs
  • Hard hat/Steele-toed boots

Work Conditions:

Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk.

Physical Demands:

The job has some significant hazards and physical demands are heavy. Duties involve continuous bending, lifting, digging, carrying or walking, and/or using force equal to lifting 50-100 pounds. Requires stooping, kneeling, bending, turning and reaching; at times work in noisy and crowded environments.

Mental Demands:

While performing the duties of this class, the incumbent is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; use math and mathematical reasoning; perform detailed work, multiple tasks; work with constant interruptions; and interact with staff and the public.
