General Summary of Duties: Medical Assistant's are responsible for providing professional care to clinic patients under supervision of the clinician. Medical Assistant assists clinicians and staff in coordinating patient care. Functions as primary liaison between patients, staff and clinician.

General Medical Assistant Responsibilities/Tasks:

  1. Assess patient's general condition, take vital signs and weight.
  2. Maintain exam rooms for necessary supplies and materials. Ensure cleanliness. Prepare list of medical supplies needed. Prepare equipment and aid physician during treatment, examination and testing of patients.
  3. Facilitate education of patient/family about diagnostic procedures, nutrition and maintenance of health and wellness.
  4. Greet patients and prepare them for physician examination. Screen patient for appropriate information. Instruct patient in collection of samples and tests.
  5. Maintain/review patient records, scribe other pertinent information. Record tests and examination results in patient's chart.
  6. Respond to/refer incoming patient treatment-related phone calls. Facilitate instruction to patient and family regarding medications and treatment.
  7. Maintain patient confidentiality.
  8. Schedule referrals and tests as/if directed by provider.
  9. Address pharmacy calls, order procedures, labs, imaging per provider request
  10. Sanitize, restock, organize exam rooms, procedure room, supply room, clinical care areas.
  11. Perform other related duties as directed or required.

EDUCATION: High school diploma.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of one-year Medical Assistant experience preferred.

REQUIREMENTS: Medical Assistant Certification preferred.

KNOWLEDGE: The jobholder must demonstrate current competencies applicable to the job position.

  1. Knowledge of basic clinical principles and protocols.
  2. Knowledge of policies and procedures related to infection control, environmental safety and patient confidentiality.
  3. Knowledge of medical chart reporting/records.


  1. Skill in appropriate assessment and assistance techniques.
  2. Skill in appropriate use of universal precautions, safe workplace and confidentiality methods.
  3. Skill in health information management by appropriately charting patient data.


  1. Ability to work effectively as a team member with physicians and other staff.
  2. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  3. Ability to interact with patients, families others in an empathetic, respectful and friendly manner.
  4. Ability to flexibly respond to changing demands.
  5. Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize
  6. Ability to communicate clearly.


Medical Assistant can expect varied activities including standing, walking, reaching, bending and lifting. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Must be able to use a variety of office equipment. Occasionally lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds. May require working under stressful conditions.


Normal office and exam room environment. Possible exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
