Catholic Charities is the official domestic relief agency of the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon.

Healthcare Outreach Need:

Catholic Charities of Oregon is seeking one AmeriCorps member with an interest in public health and working with refugee and immigrant communities. We will help you build your knowledge of community resources so that you can reach out to communities and help connect them to health and mental health supports, as well as promote healthy living activities.

Catholic Charities of Oregon's (CCO) Refugee Services programs have been assisting refugees since the early 1940s, helping more than 10,000 people make Oregon their new home. CCO is an affiliate of the national voluntary agency United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and is one of only three agencies in the state of Oregon who provide resettlement services. Through its programming, CCO assists individuals and families who must leave their homelands due to the fear of persecution based on reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, and/or political opinion. The services offered through these programs address a wide array of needs, ranging from initial resettlement to long-term intensive case management, to promote successful integration into United States society while maintaining the respect and dignity of each individual and their unique culture and traditions.


Catholic Charities of Oregon (CCO) is seeking a (1) AmeriCorps member who will work to enhance CCO healthcare outreach related services. The position has two goals:

  • Assist Catholic Charities Refugee Services connect clients to primary care, behavioral health services (within CCO or externally), and enroll in health insurance benefits that meet the client eligibility.
  • Engage community members to provide classes, mentorship, and other educational opportunities to increase health literacy.


  • Assist clients in signing up for health insurance and connecting to primary care and behavioral health services.
  • Support Refugee Health team:
    • To identify community partner agencies or volunteers who are able to teach health-related activities, such as nutrition classes, healthy shopping habits, etc.
    • Tobacco prevention and outreach program projects and meetings
  • Reach out to community health partners and attend community meetings
  • Assist clients with medical appointment navigation and transportation to medical appointments

This position is a part of Catholic Charities USA's Healthcare Outreach Program, a national intermediary project. As a member, you will meet virtually with other members serving throughout the country, all focused on assisting individuals within healthcare outreach.

  • Interest and experience in public health and community organizing and/or working, volunteering, or engaging directly with low income and/or diverse communities.
  • Interest in building knowledge of community resources.
  • Preference for applicants with a Bachelors degree in Public Health or a behavioral science field from an accredited college or university or one year of full-time professional experience in public health or mental health settings.
  • Preference for applicants with Community Health Worker Certificate, or willingness to work towards obtaining Community Health Worker Certificate
  • Preference for applicants who have worked with or have lived experience with the following groups: African Americans, Latinx, immigrants and/or refugees.
  • Ability to effectively work with standard office programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, Microsoft Teams and Salesforce.
  • Demonstrate judgment and discretion in dealing with confidential matters.
  • Commitment to Catholic Charities mission to work in partnership with vulnerable populations to achieve lasting solutions to poverty and injustice.
  • Ability to work a standard office work schedule, though some evenings and weekends may be required occasionally.
  • Driver's license and ability to obtain automobile insurance at levels required by agency (100/300/100) required; access to vehicle strongly preferred. Frequent driving in the metro area.
  • Satisfactory results from criminal, civil and/or motor vehicle background check required.
