The Aspire Program is a comprehensive 4-year career development program that integrates principles of entrepreneurship, creativity, and leadership to prepare students for the careers of today and of the future. The Aspire Center is the hub of activity for The Aspire Program with a scope of work that extends well beyond the work of a traditional career center. Carthage's location in the Milwaukee to Chicago corridor provides students access to a wide range of experiential learning and post-graduate opportunities, and its unique J-term and off-campus study programs provide global options to expand students' perspectives on the world.
The Aspire Center consists of a small and growing team doing work that will make a real impact in both on- and off-campus communities. In an average day, we're as likely to be strategizing about regional workforce development needs as planning a program with on-campus colleagues for first years to explore their sense of purpose. We're like a start-up housed in an established organization, and we are looking for people who are energized by the trials and triumphs of building a new program.
Each Career Specialist in The Aspire Center is an integrated member of the campus holistic advising team/model, working with faculty, student success advisors, and other colleagues, to provide added support to students in order to support their success during and after Carthage.
This specialist will serve as liaison to faculty in academic departments within the Division of Arts and Humanities, as well as contributing to campus-wide efforts to support entrepreneurship. The Division includes the following areas of study: African Studies, Art, Asian Studies, Chinese, Communication, Creative Writing, Dance, English, Film and New Media, French, German, Graphic Design, History, Interfaith Studies, Japanese, Music, Photography, Public Relations, Religion, Spanish, Theatre, and Women and Gender Studies.
The Arts, Communication, and Culture Career Specialist will guide students through fulfilling the expectations associated with The Aspire Program, core competencies, and students' My Aspire Plan (MAP). MAP, powered by technology provided by Suitable, is Carthage's primary tool for helping students to engage in micro-learning experiences and to compile a developmental ePortfolio containing their personal and professional development activities.
It wouldn't be likely for one person to have expertise in all of the areas pursued by arts and humanities students, so the ideal Career Specialist will be skilled at getting students started in their journey and helping them to access needed supplemental resources to build the depth of skills necessary for success in their chosen fields. This Career Specialist will help students to clarify their interests, understand their skills, and position themselves effectively for a variety of careers along with helping them to understand their multiple life roles, such as work, service, family, and avocation.
The creativity and critical thinking skills fostered through the arts and humanities, as well as the requirements for commonly pursued fields, make it particularly important for many arts and humanities students to cultivate entrepreneurial skills. Beyond the designated caseload of students, this Career Specialist will also be able to contribute to the evolving campus-wide entrepreneurship endeavors after getting settled into core responsibilities for assigned students. Carthage's approach to entrepreneurship recognizes historic inequities faced by emerging entrepreneurs (especially women and people of color) and seeks to cultivate curiosities and networks to help all students to see the possibilities for themselves as innovators and to overcome obstacles.
The Career Specialist for Arts, Communication, and Culture will design and execute programming, advising, and communication plans in alignment with the overall Aspire vision to engage students in their My Aspire Plans.They will work closely with colleagues to develop a strong portfolio of learning experiences that lead to meaningful experiential learning opportunities and outcomes after graduation that are consistent with students' goals.
In order to successfully meet the goals for the role, the Arts, Communication, and Culture Career Specialist will engage in activities like the following:
- Support the integration of existing and new curricular and co-curricular experiences into MAP.
- Advise students (individually and in small groups) on the full range of career development tasks such as recognizing personal capabilities, defining career plans, understanding expectations for their field(s) of interest, networking with mentors/employers, obtaining experiential learning, and securing post-graduate opportunities consistent with their personal and professional development goals.
- Collaborate with faculty and external partners (ex. alumni, employers, graduate/professional school representatives) in coordination with the Aspire external relations team to plan formal and informal learning opportunities aligned with The Aspire Program competencies to help students design and fulfill expectations for their My Aspire Plans (MAPs). Group-based learning activities are a central component of Aspire; examples include networking/mentoring events, alumni/student service experiences, site visits, and professional skill-building workshops.
- Identify, use, and develop resources to support students' competency development; utilize internal and external resources and Carthage subscription services (such as Jobscan, PathwayU, Handshake, and others).
- Participate in data collection and assessment efforts in alignment with departmental- and campus-wide goals and measures. Utilize quantitative and qualitative data.
- Promote The Aspire Program and Carthage College to prospective and current students, as well as other key audiences to support student interest/engagement from before they arrive on campus.
- Build awareness about on- and off-campus experiences that enable students to build skills/networks and gain access to meaningful experiential learning opportunities.
- Teach courses, such as a College Success Seminar or an Aspire-related course.
As part of a developing program, there will be ample opportunities to explore new projects and areas of responsibility, especially as you build greater skill and comfort within your core areas of responsibility. You will both support your direct caseload and contribute to the development of The Aspire Program overall.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Experience in advising, teaching, or counseling; experience with high school or college-aged students is preferred
- Ability to work effectively within a culturally diverse community of students/alumni, faculty, and staff
- Demonstrated commitment to understanding cultural competence, unconscious bias, and historic inequities that influence students' ability to succeed in and after college; comfortable engaging others in difficult conversations to build understanding and address inequities
- Skilled with using technology required for the role, such as Google Workspace/GSuite, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, social media (such as LinkedIn and Instagram), and similar productivity, reporting and communication tools. It is helpful, but not required to have experience with databases/information management tools, such as Salesforce, Handshake, Less Annoying CRM, or Smartsheet.
- Possess effective written and verbal communication skills across mediums with attentiveness to detail, tone, and audience
- Being qualified to interpret career, personality, or cultural competence assessments is a plus; however, on-the-job training can also be provided (examples of assessments that may be used in the role include: PathwayU, Strong Interest Inventory, Myers-Briggs Personality Indicator/MBTI, and Intercultural Development Inventory/IDI)
- Experience prioritizing immediate and longer term work, as well as managing competing priorities
- Available to work some evenings and weekends; valid driver's license and willingness to travel (primarily in Kenosha, Racine, Milwaukee, and Chicagoland area) and usually during normal business hours.
