Apprentice Lineman

Central Alabama Electric Cooperative is seeking an Apprentice Lineman to work either from its West Operations Center, currently located in Verbena, AL, or its East Operations Center, currently located in Titus, AL. (Because this position will eventually require being subject to after-hours on-call status and quick response, residence within area boundaries required.)

The Apprentice Lineman position (I, II, and III) progresses and develops the specialized skills necessary for the safe construction, operation and maintenance of a reliable electric distribution and fiber system under the instruction from any higher ranked positions, including Lineman, Journeyman Lineman, or Lead Lineman.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Completes the requisite Apprentice Lineman training, skill and experience modules for levels I, II and III in a timely manner, with the expectation of continued progression to Lineman and Journeyman Lineman status.
Develops and displays proficiency and a working knowledge of equipment, hardware, and other tools necessary for performance of tasks; develops proficiency in maintenance and repair as directed.
Develops familiarity with the service area and becomes proficient with system maps and staking sheets.
Develops familiarity with the maintenance performed on all components of overhead and underground electric distribution systems, both energized and de-energized. Performs job tasks on de-energized poles with minimum supervision. Under direct supervision, begins to perform duties on energized lines.
Installs capacitors, voltage regulators and other system apparatus under close supervision.
Becomes familiar with and knowledgeable of locations, general operation, and maintenance of CAEC substations.
Prepares, maintains, and submits paperwork and documentation for project tracking and cost management.
Develops familiarity with the maintenance performed on all components of overhead and underground fiber distribution systems.
Responsible for keeping tools, work equipment and materials in orderly arrangement on vehicle and charged to proper work order.
Promotes good member/customer relations by showing respect for their property, i.e., avoiding crop damage, breaking of fences, leaving gates open, etc.
Displays a professional attitude when interacting with members/customers, representing CAEC in a professional manner at all times.
Remains current on CAEC safety practices and procedures, CPR, and first aid; displays knowledge of safe working practices set forth in CAEC's Safety Manual through daily work practices.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous electrical experience and strong math skills preferred.
Residence within area boundaries required.
Must successfully complete the knowledge, experience and skills requisite for each level in order to progress to the next higher level.
Must be able to operate a personal computer.
Legible handwriting is required.
Must be able to analyze situations, trouble-shoot, and apply sound judgment decisions in performance of responsibilities.
Must be able to interact well with internal and external customers, handling inquiries and solving problems. Conveys professional interaction at all times, thereby maintaining positive relations. Displays and encourages team effort for maximum efficiency and productivity.
Must be able to organize, prioritize tasks and complete all assignments accurately and with attention to detail. Must maintain confidentiality with sensitive information.
Must possess or have the ability to gain a working knowledge of software applications pertinent to the Cooperative's system and/or Microsoft programs.
Maintains thorough working knowledge of Cooperative Bylaws, policies, procedures, and safety manual.
Should possess or have the ability to gain a thorough knowledge of first aid applications, CPR, and rescue procedures.
Must be able to attend periodic seminars, training programs, conferences, civic and professional events, as well as have the ability to participate in mutual aid outage restoration efforts.
This position requires the availability of the employee during bad weather or unusual conditions for all times of any day and night to assist in restoration of service during system outages and emergencies. Will be in rotation to work during non-business hours, often requiring the employee to be available to work overtime, as needed.
Must hold a valid Alabama driver's license at the level necessary to operate vehicles in the performance of position responsibilities, up to and including a Class A Commercial Driver's License.

Physical Demands

Must be physically able to perform activities required in the construction and maintenance of distribution for underground and distribution lines, such as climbing poles and ladders and heavy lifting. Frequently operates standard office machines requiring touch and vision for close work. Normal activities include sitting, standing, walking, with access to confined areas or awkward positions necessary. Normal work environment is 10% indoor and 90% outdoors. Frequently lifts materials weighing up to 50 pounds, yet occasionally lifts materials up to 100 pounds. Due to weight restrictions for bucket work, the weight of the employee must not exceed 300 pounds. Equipment carried while climbing a ladder added to the weight of an employee shall not exceed weight limitations set forth by ladder manufacturer.
