Vet Assistants, Vet Technicians and CVTs (4 Day Work Week)

COMBINE YOUR PASSION WITH A PURPOSE in our Trauma Hospital. We currently have assistant/technician positions available in our Bottle Baby ICU, Parvo ICU, Shelter Spay and Neuter Surgery, Foster Department, Trauma Hospital and Capacity and Flow Department.

Join our competitive paying, non-profit shelter hospital to help save the lives of homeless pets that have nowhere else to go. Our technician positions start at $19.00 hourly, based on experience.

Your schedule will be four 10-hour work days with three days off every week; giving you extra time to enjoy life outside of work! Overtime available!

A DAY IN THE LIFE AT AHS' Veterinary Medical Departments may include:

  • Assist veterinarians in all aspects of AHS' Trauma Hospital, including surgery, laboratory diagnostics, fluid therapy, emergency care as necessary, the administration of prescribed medications, client education and clinic asepsis.
  • TPR, administer vaccines and other medications, implant microchips
  • Monitor vital signs of sedated and anesthetized patients in preoperative, operative, and postoperative phases.
  • Intubate animals, place intravenous catheters, perform venipuncture, and administer fluids as needed.
  • Offer post-operative care to our pets.
  • Maintain all records and documentation in our shelter management software.
  • Offer an excellent experience every time to our customers. Offer compassionate communication and clear home-care directions for foster pets.
  • Administer treatment to the injured animals currently in the hospital.
  • Collect, prepare and submit all lab samples to outgoing vendors.
  • Perform physical exam on all animals; verify adoptability determination or appropriate avenue for disposition.
  • Digital whole body and dental radiographs adhering to all required radiation safety procedures.
  • Assist in all areas of surgery from routine spays and neuters to orthopedic surgeries.
  • Perform Felv, Felv/Fiv and Heartworm tests, implant microchips and administer any necessary vaccines.
  • Fear free animal handling while being able to provide animal enrichment.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  1. High school diploma or G.E.D. required
  2. Preferably completion of a veterinary assisting or technician program OR experience at a veterinary hospital or clinic. CVT not required. Education may substitute for experience.
  3. Knowledge of phlebotomy, immunology, parasitology, endocrinology and pharmacology.
  4. Knowledgeable in anesthesiology.
  5. Know veterinary medical concepts, including, but not limited to vaccine protocols and anesthetic risks. Be able to communicate such information to clients.
  6. Safe and humane animal handling skills are required.
  7. Work well both independently and cooperatively as part of team.
  8. Remain composed while working in fast-paced environment.
  9. Assist with or perform and properly document euthanasia.

Computer Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and Explorer; able to learn other software programs as necessary. Proficiency with or able to learn/use Chameleon software (for use with animals in a shelter environment) and able to learn other software programs as necessary.

Other Skills, Abilities and Qualifications: Regular attendance is required. Access to reliable transportation.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work Environment: There will be exposure to dust, heat, cold and temperature changes; occasional wet floors, and animal noises, odors and dander. Most time will be spent in a typical air conditioned and heated office environment.
