A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A LIFESAVING SHELTER VETERINARIAN
- Oversee treatment of homeless animals, often in distress, brought in by our nationally recognized Emergency Animal Medical Technicians and provide accurate care instructions to team of veterinary technicians
- Evaluate owned pets brought in for appointments as part of AHS' Owned Animal Program
- Perform physical exams, diagnostics, therapeutics and determine appropriate disposition for incoming animals
- Provide clear instructions and guidance to AHS Foster Heroes and, at times, adopters
- Perform various soft tissue surgeries, denal surgery, and spay/neuter.
- Formulate, oversee, present, implement, review and update a humane euthanasia program
- Maintain all medical records
- Monitor, dispense and log controlled substances according to established DEA standards
- Utilize leadership abilities to formulate and teach medical classes for staff, volunteers and other agencies
- Assist other departments on situations involving the welfare of the animals, such as testifying in court, appearing in media opportunities, providing necessary documentation and medical expertise regarding the health of the animals in our care
- Be available and respond quickly to "on-call" emergency situations
- Attend seminars to satisfy continuing education requirements for Arizona D.V.M. license renewal
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine OR Veterinary Medical Doctor Degree and licensed to practice in Arizona.
- One year of experience in a veterinary practice with emphasis on surgery skills.
- Must possess above average surgery skills and compassion towards pets and people.
- Orthopedic surgery experience is a plus.
- Must be able to evaluate health status in an objective manner and determine most appropriate disposition of an animal.
- Good communications skills are necessary.
Language Skills: Able to speak, read and write English; Spanish language also helpful.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic mathematical skills.
Computer Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and Explorer; able to learn other software programs as necessary. Proficiency with or able to learn/use Chameleon software (for use with animals in a shelter environment).
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid Driver's License.
Other Skills, Abilities and Qualifications: Regular attendance is required. Access to reliable transportation.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Work Environment: There will be exposure to dust, heat, cold and temperature changes; occasional wet floors, and animal noises, odors and dander. Most time will be spent in a typical air conditioned and heated office environment.
