The Arizona Humane Society is seeking a collaborative, dynamic, forward thinking, influential, results-driven leader to serve as the Director of Pet Adoptions and Retail. Reporting to the Vice President of External Affairs & Service Operations, the Director of Pet Adoptions and Retail is responsible for overseeing all adoption and placement programs. The Director will demonstrate a passion for animal welfare and understand the importance of the human-animal bond. This is a time of exciting organizational growth as we prepare to open our new Rob & Melani Walton Papago Park Campus in 2023. As we take this next step transforming Maricopa County into the animal welfare community of the future, this person will lead robust teams and develop and execute strategies to place more pets into loving homes and among our partners. The Director of Pet Adoptions and Retail will have the drive to create big ideas and implement with them enthusiasm and impact. To be successful in this role, the Director will be an excellent leader with a deep understanding of animal population trends, including activities to move populations for the betterment of animals. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF the Director of Pet Adoptions and Retail will include:

  • Oversee all Pet Placement initiatives focused on connecting pets and people (Adoptions, Offsite Adoptions, Transport, Rescue Partner Program, Working and Community Cats Programs and Reception).
  • Develop and implement strategic priorities to enhance overall progress toward organizational goals, including those tied to new Papago Park Campus.
  • Engage in external research and data collection initiatives to support strategic decision-making.
  • Engage strategic regional and national relationships that support Pet Placement strategies.
  • Manage and develop the Pet Placement team by attracting, training, coaching and retaining high-performance associates; empowering them to elevate their level of responsibility, span of control and performance.
  • Regularly monitor and evaluate programs and adjust to maximize impact.
  • Excel in planning, developing and determining success and managing risk in programs and initiatives.
  • Evaluate and update policies and procedures to improve service quality while driving efficiencies. Prepare department budgets and manage expenditures within budget parameters.
  • Serve as a collaborative, engaged leader and seamlessly work across all departments. Foster an environment of innovation, compassion, and excellence.
  • Develop goals that help drive the Pet Placement team's mission and communicate goals and objectives to team members.
  • Assist in development and execution and actively promote the organization's strategic goals.
  • Understand the customer lifecycle; customer drivers; competitors to effective message and market to consumers; partner with marketing to develop promotional strategies.
  • Leverage technology to enhance the customer experience.
  • Partner with Development to engage donors; secure grants and ensure compliance of grants.
  • Develop and analyze yearly budgets; prepare financial and monthly reports.
  • Ensure departments are providing an Excellent Experience Every Time to our customers, both internal and external. Monitor net promoter scores and survey feedback, adjust tactics to ensure exceptional service.
  • Remain informed with relevant industry trends and practices.
  • Successfully resolve customer inquiries or complaints.
  • Actively participate in board, director and leadership team meetings; Participate in donor events, meetings and tours as requested.
  • Be a leading voice in animal welfare and be comfortable presenting to large and small groups.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

Education / Certifications / Licenses:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or related field required.
  2. Certified Animal Welfare Administrator (CAWA) certification preferred.
  3. Valid driver's license

Experience and Attributes:

  • 5+ years' experience in animal welfare leadership or related field.
  • Demonstrated track record in leading and developing large teams.
  • Strategic thinker who excels in fast-paced environment and can translate complex concepts into actionable plans and programs.
  • Significant experience utilizing data and insights to optimize programs.
  • A self-starter who can lead multiple priorities under pressure and lead with a sense of urgency.
  • Critical, creative and innovate thinker is a must.

Experience in customer experience, customer lifecycle, CRM.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

Language - Able to speak, read, write and understand English. Exceptional communication skills. Bilingual Spanish a plus.

Mathematical - Able to develop budgets, performance and financial reviews.

Technical - Animal sheltering and welfare knowledge; people development; project management

Other Skills, Abilities and Qualifications: Regular attendance is required. Access to reliable transportation.

Physical Demands & Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. There may be occasional wet floors, animal noises, odors, and dander. Most time will be spent in a typical air conditioned and heated office environment.
