Arena Stage Fellowship
  • Washington, DC, USA
  • $600 per week
  • Fellowship

A stipend is money that is provided to help you with your living expenses during the fellowship. A stipend is not wages or salary. Fellows are issued their stipends weekly at a rate of $600 per week. The weekly stipend is taxable. Arena Stage will withhold taxes, making the take home most likely between $450-$480 per week, depending on the fellow's state of residence. Fellows have the option to be covered by Arena Stage’s health insurance, if they wish, at a small cost to the fellow that varies depending on the level of coverage they select. Note that insurance coverage doesn’t start until the fellow has worked for 45 days.

Are you looking for a position to learn more about how philanthropy fuels and grows the arts? As the Development Fellow, you will have an opportunity to receive hands-on training with the three teams that make up the Development Department-including Strategic Philanthropy (Individual), Institutional (Foundation, Corporate, and Government) Relations, and Operations and Events as well as other Arena Stage staff members. We are seeking an emerging arts leader who will benefit from fundraising experience and mentorship that will complement current skills and further long-term goals in arts leadership.

Arena Stage will provide the fellow with opportunities to develop skills in all areas of theater fundraising including:

  • Digital and print membership appeals
  • Major gift cultivation and research
  • Corporate sponsorships
  • Foundation partnerships and grant writing
  • Event planning and execution
  • Supporting donor engagement at every level, including board members
  • General administrative support

An ideal candidate is hardworking, does not back away from challenges, and should have the desire to work both independently and collaboratively to achieve Development department goals. A growth mindset is essential to your success! Outstanding written and verbal communication skills are needed in this role, and we value skills like social tactfulness, discretion, and the ability to maintain composure in high pressure situations. An understanding of the Microsoft Office Suite is required and Tessitura or a similar donor database is helpful.

Additional Expectations: Occasionally, some special events may take place outside of regular office hours.

Please Note: The Allen Lee Hughes Fellowship Program requires a time commitment of 40 hours/weekly and does not include on-stage opportunities or allow for additional work to be conducted during assigned fellowship hours. If you would like to learn more about audition opportunities, please check out Arena's opportunities page.

You might be interested in this fellowship if you want to pursue a career in fund-raising, philanthropy, or arts administration and leadership.

The approximated 40 hours/weekly commitment does not include on-stage opportunities or allow for additional outside work to be conducted during assigned fellowship hours.
