A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A PART-TIME CLINICAL SPECIALIST

As a Clinical Specialist, you apply an ecological approach to family and individual therapy. Your emphasis is on serving families of children from birth through age 18 through both crisis intervention and mental health services. Based on standardized assessments and treatment goal-planning, you provide intervention and treatment services that incorporate a family systems model. This model is based on human development, cognitive-behavioral, and attachment theories. You emphasize solution-focused interventions embedded within the context of the community, external systems, and culture of the family.

You facilitate strategies that help all members of the family improve interactions and comfort levels within larger community settings. When needed, you act as a liaison or consultant between our program and other agencies. You also advocate and negotiate for needed services and support. Occasionally, you are asked to give educational presentations to staff, other professionals, and community groups regarding the mental health needs of children. You also provide mental health consultation to our other prevention programs. Working to build stronger families by breaking cycles of trauma, abuse, and neglect is highly rewarding for you!
